I first met Catherine and Steve in a run down bus stop in a town of Haridwar in North India when I was travelling with my wife. Over a month or two our paths crossed on several occasions and we always had the best time on mini adventures and swapping stories from the road, many of which are not fit for this blog. A couple of years later they got back in touch and asked me to shoot their wedding in Queensland, Australia.

So it was that I found myself heading out to Camp Moogerah, perched on the edge of a huge dammed lake about 170km west of Brisbane. The camp is an outdoor activity centre and Steve and Catherine with the help of an army of helpers transformed it into a beautiful venue for their wedding.

The temperature and humidity had been rising throughout the morning and as I finished photographing Steve getting ready an immense rain and thunder storm got underway, preventing any kind of movement across camp. Thankfully the lakeside Tipi where Catherine was getting ready had survived the deluge unscathed and the sun came out for an incredible outdoor ceremony by the lake.

The rest of the afternoon, evening and night was one long riotous celebration. In between all the action I noticed that a full moon was rising and convinced them to make the short journey from the canteen to the lakeside for an epic nighttime shot under the stars. I positioned them lakeside with a torch, told them to stand still, and the result is something this is only possible when you are truly in the middle of nowhere and away from the rest of mankind.

In the weeks leading up to the wedding Steve and Catherine discovered they were due to have a baby and now they are parents to a beautiful daughter. 2015 has been an epic year for you both – a huge congratulations again and I’ll be forever grateful for meeting you guys at that goddamn awful bus stop.

from Catherine:
“My husband and I were fortunate enough to meet Richard and his lovely wife whilst travelling at a dusty bus stop! For the next few months our paths crossed numerous times as we travelled from the North to South of India. 2 years later he was in Australia photographing our bush wedding!

After seeing his photography in India there was no question that we wanted Richard to be the man for the job. The only difficulty would be getting him to Australia. As luck would have it adventure is in his soul and he made the trek across the globe!

I look back on the pictures now and am so grateful for how he captured the day. His enthusiasm and easy approach took away any stresses on the day.

His photography speaks for itself and I would recommend his work to anybody”
